A Muslim’s Answer to Trials and Hardships

One of the most beautiful parts of our religion is that it tells us in many ways how we should deal with trials and hardship in life. The life of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم and all other prophets shows how beautifully they dealt with hardships in their life. Trials and difficulties were not just part of the life of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم but all other prophets went through it. For Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم one can say that it was the plan of the Divine Being to make him strong by facing trials from early life.

And this is not just Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم but if you read the stories of every other prophet in the Quran they faced difficulties in their lives in different ways but all of them remained patient and grateful to Allah the Almighty. They never lost hope even if the difficulty was as big as carrying a mountain on their shoulders. Prophet Ayyub عليه السلام suffered a fate that no human being can ever imagine. He lost his wife, kids, health, and became poor but all he did was remain persistently patient in that time of hardship. Prophet Ibrahim’s عليه السلام life on the other hand was also full of sacrifices and in each sacrifice not only he remained patient and grateful to Allah but his wife and son proved to be the true believers, firm and submissive to the will of Allah .

When you compare Islamic scriptures (Quran and Hadith) with the scriptures in other faith you can clearly see that Islam does not write about the hardships and how prophets saw them as a curse or a punishment but indeed a trial of Allah. While in other faiths they are presented as real trials. Islam depicts these trials as a Divine Plan to understand and realize the presence of Allah. The believer becomes spiritually stronger and gains the real understanding of the world.

Islam is a religion of complete submission to Allah, but at the same time it is a religion of justice. A believer remains patient in every difficulty he faces in this life because he knows that this is not the end of life. Life will begin again once this life will terminate. Justice will be rewarded to every human being and Allah is the most just of all. This does not however mean that the believer loses hope but he strives until the last breath and keeps his faith in getting out of the hard time.

Allah says in the Quran that he did not create this world in vain but there are sublime reasons behind the creation of this world. There are balances for example, in the creation of day and night, earth and skies and good and bad. So once we accept that everything is created from Allah it is obvious to understand and believe that sufferings are also part of the Divine Plan and only thinking in this way can lead a believer to get the inner peace in the time of turmoil in his/her life. Only in this way he can stay strong and move on. Once he is out of the difficult times he has better self actualization and knows that trials can never weaken him but rather make him stronger.

This also implies that if a believer goes through difficult times in his life he always finds the blessings that are hidden from the view for a person who faces hardship but does not believe in the omnipotence of God. A person who is patient has the blessings of Allah along with him and no believer can trade it with anything in this world. As Allah says in Quran

“O you who believe, seek help through patience and prayer. Surely, Allah is with those who are patient.” (Q. 2:153)
